Improving education quality in Benin

Benin

BENIN

Adjarra

Situation:

Benin is a country in west Africa that borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. The capital is Porto Novo. It is one of the least developed countries in the world. The literacy level is among the lowest in the world. 42.5% of people older than 15 knows how to read and over half of women (56.1%) does not know how to read or write. The state lacks the resources to ensure that all children go to school and there is a great level of inequality in education between rural areas and cities. Only the children of families with financial means have the opportunity to receive quality education.

The aim of the project is to improve the level of education in the country. To this end, the congregation Esclavas de la Eucaristía is building a school for pre-school, primary, and secondary age children that can meet the education challenges of the 21st century and contribute to the aim of the project.

The school will be in the city of Adjarra, 10km from the country’s capital, Porto Novo. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and several small homes. Adjarra has a population of over 100,000 inhabitants.

The project has four stages and will be carried out between 2020 and 2028.
